Poems

FOR ELIJAH
By, Alison Poteracke
soft are the wicked
folly of the weak
like sand through your fingertips
the truth is so much harder to believe

we pluck the truth like forbidden fruit
hanging from low branches
just to be tossed away
lies are so much sweeter anyway

we took to the streets
but it’s all just sound

REST IN POWER
By, Alison Poteracke
will it ever end, the loss, the grief, the hate
when will there be change
how many more added names before we set aside our hate, our greed
how long must the way of things stay the same

what’s normal isn’t normal
loss of life, inequity is intolerable
only fruit should hang from trees
we all should have the right to breathe
to breathe

if you can’t see this fight is to be considered human
not half, not three quarters, but a full person
there’s no dispute that all matter
but until he can breathe, we have to do better
because all can’t matter until black lives matter

to breathe, just to breathe
such a simple demand, an absolute necessity
imagine not having that basic right
having to fight unnecessarily, constantly for your life

too often we forget the pain once it’s convenient
not this time, say their names, don't stay silent
those names taken from life and added to that list
taken by those sworn to protect and assist

if you can’t see this fight is to be considered human
not half, not three quarters, but a full person
there’s no contest that all matter
but until she can sleep, we have to do better
because all can’t matter until black lives matter

until he can walk down the street, we have to do better, be better
because until black lives matter…
